Great Britain
Kings of All England. Eadwig Penny ND (955-959) AU (edge chips), Southampton mint, Mangod as moneyer, Short Cross/Horizontal-Trefoil 3 (HT3) type, S-1123, N-727 (R), CTCE-88, MEC VIII-Unl. 21mm. 1.40gm. +EADVVIG REX, small cross pattee / +IIΛHG | +HΛ+II+ | OD IIO in three lines, group of three pellets (trefoil) above and below. An extremely rare monarch to locate at all, let alone with such an enviable strike as is the present example, the design deeply impressed in the center of the flan with light salty patina. While the scrupulous collector might at first decry the edge chips, the overall execution of the piece makes even these seem of little consequence. Sold with old lot tags.
Ex. DNW Sale 123 (June 2014, Lot 95); Spink 1993; Norweb Collection, Part IV (Spink Auction 59, June 1987, Lot 1193); Glendining Auction (April 1954, Lot 142)
