Great Britain
Kings of All England. Edward the Martyr Penny ND (975-978) XF40 NGC, Lympne mint, Byrhtric as moneyer, S-1142, N-763 (R), MEC VIII-Unl, SCBI Copenhagen-824. 1.27gm. +EΛDǷEΛRD REX ΛNGLOX, diademed bust of Edward left / +BΓRHTRTIC Mo LIM, small cross pattee. An extremely rare type and mint that stood as a numismatic embodiment of the transitioning structure of rule between the reigns of Eadgar and Aethelred II, this incredible penny proves exceptional in more ways than one. Despite the obverse die being heavily rusted, the reverse retains a beautiful pewter patina with accents of gold and light traces of residual luster, the legends on both sides still legible. This same coin brought it access of the equivalent of $6700 at its 2014 DNW appearance, where it was noted that despite BMC listing four examples of Edward's pennies from Lympne, SCBI Copenhagen cited the sole other specimen from this moneyer.
