Great Britain
Kings of All England. Harold II Godwinson Penny ND (January 6-October 14th, 1066) AU55 PCGS, York mint, Beorn as moneyer, Pax type, S-1186, N-836. +HΛROLD REX ΛNGL, crowned bust of Harold left, scepter held before / BEORN ON E[...]NE, PAX across field between two lines. Astonishing quality for this final English monarch prior to the Norman conquest, most of Harold's pennies plagued by flat, weak, uneven strikes and poor states of preservation. Despite some minor unevenness before the bust, the king's bust itself appears painstakingly engraved and expressive, with the moneyer's name fully legible on the opposite side.

Harold was the son of Earl Godwine of Wessex, brother-in-law to Edward the Confessor, who had gained prominence at court during that monarch's reign. While Harold successfully repelled the invasion of Harald Hardrada of Norway, he ultimately fell at the Battle of Hastings after a reign of just 9 months.
