Great Britain
James II Crown 1687 MS64 PCGS, KM463, S-3407, ESC-743. British collectors are well-aware that the Crown issues of James II are notoriously difficult to find in better states of Mint preservation, tending to either exhibit wear, significant handling or surface issues handicapping them to lower levels of Mint State, as well as other problems, including striking weakness that leaves larger portions of the design less than fully struck. This offering then, should recognized for what it is: a top-tier example of the utmost quality, not only technically but also aesthetically. For the type, the specimen displays a balanced strike, leaving no significant areas of softness, James' bust evenly rendered and boldly outlined. The planchet reveals full underlying luster, tempered only in strength by a gorgeous patina of interwoven argent and metallic hues, evolving to sparkling flow flow lines that pull dramatically from the sharp peripheral legends, these dressed in light touches of honeyed tone. On the whole, a memorable example expressing quality rarely seen for the type!
