Great Britain
James II Crown 1687 MS61 NGC, KM463, S-3407, ESC-743. There are some coins for which the grade is somewhat irrelevant, and amongst these are the Crown coins of short-reigned James II. Due to their extremely shallow engraving style, the King's hair formed of fluted grooves in an otherwise flat surface, they appear to exhibit wear when there is actually minimal handling. Additionally, poor planchet preparation often leaves strong adjustment marks or areas of weakness to the design, and as such these types are certainly not made equal. The present offering immediately captures the eye for its unusually high quality, sleek surfaces of an appealing gunmetal gray color; James's portrait is superbly rendered, weakness to the high point of his hair but otherwise excellent preservation. Far beyond premium for the grade, a piece worthy of a selective connoisseur of British Crowns.
