Great Britain
George III Crown 1820 MS63 NGC, KM675, S-3787, ESC-Unl. LX edge. M/N in BRITANNIARUM, and no stop after TUTAMEN on edge (a feature only found on 1819 Crowns). Of the highest rarity; presently the only example known to bear these errors, and a variety which, were it listed in ESC, would quite possibly be an R7 coin. All George III Crowns are missing the inner-right serif to the M in BRITANNIARUM, and this present coin may offer an explanation why; in being struck over an N, the original M has been disrupted and the serif lost. Accordingly, this coin may well have been struck as a Proof from a master die, substantiated through the exceptional surface and strike quality. Despite being part of a series which was exceptionally well made and thus makes it difficult to distinguish Proof from business strikes, the present piece does firmly give the impression of a special striking, with razor-sharp detail and immaculate reflective surfaces, lightly toned at the peripheries. A piece which fully deserves in-hand inspection for an accurate appreciation of its quality and eye appeal, an unmatchable Crown for only the highest tier collector of British silver.
