Great Britain
Edward VIII gold Matte Specimen "Abdication" Medal 1936 SP68 PCGS, CM-347d, BHM-4277. By L.E. Pinches. Struck by John Pinches Ltd. 34mm. 36.66gm. Mintage: 100. Struck in a matte finish and preserved in virtually flawless condition, perhaps as the finest-graded example of the type seen by PCGS (the numbers somewhat unclear in this case). No official (Royal Mint) medal was struck, because of the controversy that raged in 1936 over the Prince of Wales, who became King upon his father's death, but was determined to marry an American woman who had been twice divorced. This was not acceptable in England at that time, on two counts: she was a commoner, and divorced. However, a number of privately made medals were created at the time, by those who supported the Duke and for souvenir sellers.
