Islamic Dynasties
Ottoman Empire. Mehmed II (2nd Reign, AH 855-886 / AD 1451-1481) gold Sultani AH 882 (AD 1477/8) MS63 ANACS, Constantinople mint (in Turkey), A-1306 (R), Pere-79, Damali-7-K-A1-882. The first year of this extremely rare "king" of the Ottoman series, simultaneously standing as the first Ottoman gold coin struck to supplant the Venetian ducat, minted at the former capital of the Byzantine Empire for whose conquest Mehmed earned the epithet fatih ("the Conqueror") in 1453. Seemingly conservatively graded, without the least mark or tick over the satiny gold surfaces, and only the slightest striking weakness admitted. While we have not previously handled an AH 882 example, we note a similarly rare AH 883, certified MS64 by NGC, brought $5280 in our April sale. Mislabeled on the holder as AH 1882.
