Islamic Dynasties
Ottoman Empire. Mehmed II (2nd Reign, AH 855-886 / AD 1451-1481) gold Mule Sultani AH 883-Dated (AH 885 / AD 1480/1) MS62 ANACS, Constantinople mint (in Turkey), cf. A-1306 (R; for type), Pere-80var (same), Kazan-732, Damali-Unl. (cf. Damali-7-K-A1-883 for obverse/Damali-7-K-A1-885 for reverse). While the sultanis of Mehmed II stand as undisputed rarities within the series, of the three dates that they were produced--AH 882, 883, and 885--the final date exists in a league all its own, with not a single example coming to auction in the past several decades. While the obverse-reverse die pairing shown here has appeared in both the catalog of Kazan's collection and a Morton & Eden sale from April 2013 (Auction 63, Lot 115), the type formally was not published as a mule, despite Pere, ICV, and most importantly Damali only listing two standard reverse types for the 883--one with, and one without a ligature between the final wa and beginning of bahr. Following Damali, however, only in 885 was a die style introduced that ligatured the end of the letter sad with ba of Sahib. As such, the present pristine offering likely dates from this later period, making it one of the few attainable examples of this incredibly difficult year.
