Ottoman Empire. Ahmed III gold Sultani AH 1141 (1728/9) AU53 NGC, Jazair Gharb mint (in Algeria), KM16.1, Pere-498var (date), Damali-23-CZ-A1d-1141, UBK-pg. 67 (RR+). 3.37gm. Only the second example of this extremely elusive Algerian type we have been able to locate recently coming to auction, noted by Steve Album to have been "perhaps the finest we have ever handled" when he sold it in 2012. Exhibiting heavy die rust, though the surfaces remain fully lustrous and studded with prominent die polish lines.
