GRIM | VALD, draped and crowned bust of Grimoald facing, holding globus cruciger / DOMS | CAR • RX (ligate), cross potent, G - R across field, VICΔ in exergue. An incredibly rare gold type produced in Charlemagne's name as an assertion of his dominion over the Italian Peninsula. Very well-struck in the features with prominent traces of die polish and only light rub.
