CAPPADOCIAN KINGDOM. Ariarathes V (163-130 BC). AR tetradrachm (32mm, 15.33 gm, 12h). AU 5/5 - 1/5, Fine Style. Dated Regnal Year 31 (132 BC). Diademed head of Ariarathes V right / BAΣΙΛΕΩΣ ΑPIAPAΘΟΥ ΕΥΣΕΒΟΥΣ, Athena standing left, spear resting against left arm with hand on grounded shield behind her, Nike in right hand crowning royal name; A and two monograms in left fields, AΛ (date) in second line in exergue. Cf. HGC 7, 810 (unlisted date). Cf. Simonetta, p. 23, no. 2 ("Ariarathes IV" tetradrachm of Year 30, but same obverse die), reattributed to Ariarathes V by O. Morkholm, Numismatic Chronicle 1962, pp. 408-9. Extremely rare! An outstanding and seldom-seen Hellenistic portrait. Light corrosion overall, resulting in a matte obverse surface and rough reverse surfaces; horn silver deposit at center of reverse.
Ex Heritage 3044 (3-4 January 2016), lot 30014 with NGC photo-certificate 4293394-004 for the above grade, which has since been lost.
