SELEUCID KINGDOM. Antiochus III the Great (222-187 BC). AR tetradrachm (30mm, 16.69 gm, 12h). NGC Choice AU 4/5 - 4/5. Unattributed issue of western Asia Minor, perhaps of Aeolis or northern Ionia, 222-220 or 216-213 BC. Diademed head of Antiochus III right, with long nose, hair in bangs over forehead, diadem ends falling in gentle waves; bead-and-reel border / BAΣIΛEΩΣ / ANTI-OXOY, Apollo seated left on omphalus, testing arrow in right hand, resting left hand on grounded bow with curved tips and grip marked by large pellet flanked by flat disks; vertical AK monogram downward in outer left field. cf. SC 965 (same obverse die, different symbols on reverse).

Although the AK monogram is only noted in SC for Antiochus I and Seleucus III, the obverse die is clearly the same as the plated example of SC 965, with the artifacts in the fields behind the head and diagonally away from the forehead, and along the border at 3h. The reverse die is linked to another Heritage sold (Auction 3073, 29 April 2019, lot 32123), also unpublished, but from the uncertain mint 57 in Phrygia, perhaps Synnada, ca. from 203 BC, based on the obverse portrait of that specimen. As such, it is likely the present coin, as well as perhaps SC 965, should both be reattributed to the same uncertain mint 57. A wonderfully preserved example of a fascinating discovery piece.
