Julius Caesar, as Dictator (49-44 BC). AR denarius (18mm, 4.06 gm, 7h). NGC Choice AU 4/5 - 3/5, horn silver. Military mint traveling with Caesar in northern Italy, 49 BC. CAESAR, elephant advancing right, trampling horned serpent / Pontifical implements: simpulum (ladle), aspergillum (sprinkler), securis (axe surmounted by dog or wolf's head), and apex (flamen's cap). Crawford 443/1. CRI 9. Sydenham 1006.
An argument has been made that the "serpent" about to be trampled by the exponentially larger elephant, is actually a carnyx (Celtic war horn). Politically, it would signify the recently conquered tribes of Gaul who were united for war against Caesar by chieftain Vercingetorix.
