Ancients
Augustus (27 BC-AD 14). AR denarius (19mm, 3.98 gm, 9h). NGC Choice VF 5/5 - 4/5, lt. graffito. Spain, Emerita, ca. 25-23 BC, P. Carisius, as moneyer. IMP CAESAR-AVGVST, bare head of Augustus right / P CARISIVS-LEG PRO-PR, horned Italo-Corinthian helmet between pugio (dagger) and bipennis (ax). RIC I 7a.

The classic Greek Corinthian helmet, with its large cheek pieces, nasal protector and small eye holes, was often worn pushed back on the head to provide the wearer with greater vision and air flow when not engaged in combat. The Italic variation on the Corinthian helmet was designed to be worn this way permanently; the eye holes, nasal and mouth opening becoming purely decorative and forming a distinctive "face." This helmet type is shown on this intriguing denarius type, with the bowl surmounted by what appears to be a pair of antlers.
