IRAN: AV token (4.43g), "Samarqand", AH"202", imitation of type A-224, the silver dirham struck at various eastern Abbasid mints to proclaim the heir appointment of 'Ali b. Musa al-Rida, in the caliph al-Ma'mun's attempt to reunite the Sunni and Shi'ite branches of Islam, EF-AU, R. Struck in silver from about 1890 until perhaps as late as the 1930s, first published by George Miles, who regarded it as either a regular issue or a contemporary counterfeit (Miles-256, acquired from the Staroselsky collection circa 1922). The silver "tokens" were sold as souvenir pieces to visitors to the Imem Reza Holy Shrine in Mashhad. The silver piece was still available in the antique and souvenir shops when Stephen Album visited Mashhad in 1965, but this is first example in gold that we have seen.

Estimate: 150-200 USD
