JAPAN: Keio, 1865-1868, iron 100 mon (7.42g), Hosogaya mint at Mito, Hitachi Province, ND (1864), H-7.4, type known as a Mito Tora-sen (Mito Tiger Coin), cast in iron, VF-EF, ex Dr. Axel Wahlstedt Collection. Legend in seal script translates as "Enrich the Country and Strengthen the Military." Cast at the Hosogaya Mito / Hitachi (today Ibaraki-ken). The original cast in 1864 in iron was a local emergency coin used to pay the workmen at the financially troubled copper coin mint in Mito and had a nominal valued of 100 mon. Later in 1867, this type was cast in copper and had a value of 50 mon.
