RUSSIAN EMPIRE: Nicholas I, 1825-1855, AR medal, 1826, Diakov-447.1, 65mm, silver medal by Count Fyodor Tolstoy on the 100th Anniversary of Saint Petersburg Academy of Sciences, bust of Nicholas I to right // seated Minerva holding a spear crowns with a wreath the busts of Peter I and Alexander I, owl and shield below on the ground, dated 29 December 1826 in exergue, NGC graded AU58, RRR. Count Fyodor Petrovich Tolstoy (1783-1873) was a Russian artist who served as Vice-President of the Imperial Academy of Arts for forty years, from 1828 to 1868. His works included wax-reliefs, watercolors, medallions, and silhouettes. He began working at the St. Petersburg mint in 1810, After the battle of Leipzig, he began a series of twenty-four medallions, devoted to the major battles of the Napoleonic Wars. Tolstoy's medallions acquired wide reputation not only in Russia, but also abroad. He was elected a member of almost all the European academies of fine arts. In 1861, he made his last medal, dedicated to the emancipation of the serfs.
