Canada Bank of Canada $2 1954 (ND 1961-71) BC-38bT "Test Note" PMG Very Fine 30. As is sometimes the case in this always interesting banknote hobby, a fascinating rarity surfaces from the clear blue sky. While this may seem an ordinary Bank of Canada Modified Portrait $2 note, it is anything but. During the signature periods of Beattie-Rasminsky and Lawson-Bouey, the Bank of Canada treated a few random batches of notes before releasing them into circulation. The mysterious treatment was some sort of paper upgrade intended to improve the durability of these notes, which had not much changed in the previous decades. The Charlton Standard Catalog acknowledges that only recently, a small batch of E/R prefix notes, 3744001-3872000 totaling 128,000 were created as the first test notes. As of 2012, only two E/R prefix test notes were reported in collectors' possessions. This example has moderate circulation, as the Bank of Canada had intended. But instead of being returned to the bank for analysis, this innocuous note was saved, accidentally or purposefully. The result is the same, and this incredible rarity could possibly be the first auctioned publicly with the E/R prefix and the finest surviving example known. Minor margin tears are mentioned, which could go to prove that the enhanced test notes may not have been much better than the ordinary notes. Nevertheless, a great Queen Elizabeth II and Bank of Canada rarity that is assuredly missing from even the best collections. Not to be missed. https://currency.ha.com/itm/world-currency/canada-bank-of-canada-2-1954-nd-1961-71-bc-38bt-test-note-pmg-very-fine-30/a/4015-28283.s?type=CoinArchivesCurrency4015 HID08706262019 © 2019 Heritage Auctions | All Rights Reserved
