Luxembourg Grand-Duche de Luxembourg 1000 Francs ND (1963) Pick 52B PCGS Gem New 65PPQ. An interesting highest denomination that was issued only because of Luxembourg being annoyed with Belgium. These two nations were in a monetary Union where their currencies were interchangeable, and legal tender cross-border. In 1982 the Belgians devalued their Franc without consulting its monetary partner. Needless to say, Luxembourg was upset, so much so that they wanted to terminate their agreement with Belgium. They would have done so, but lacked sufficient cash reserves, this is when they opted for an impromptu reissuance of older designs of 20, 500, and 1000 Francs. These notes were exactly the same, but different in color. For the example on offer, the original color was green, but was changed to brown. A rare example of where neighbors quibble, and currency history is made. https://currency.ha.com/itm/world-currency/luxembourg-grand-duche-de-luxembourg-1000-francs-nd-1963-pick-52b-pcgs-gem-new-65ppq/a/4015-28482.s?type=CoinArchivesCurrency4015 HID08706262019 © 2019 Heritage Auctions | All Rights Reserved
