In an attempt to stabilize the currency, the Caixa de Estabilizacao was established, backing notes of the treasury in gold. These notes attempted to protect the Brazilian economy, which only lasted for a few years before the 1929 stock market crash and subsequent depression led to a different economic policy being adopted.
