South Africa Threepence 1898 Sammy Marks Pattern in Gold KM#PnA23 in an NGC holder AU Details - Removed from Jewellery, an Extremely Rare piece, these pieces were minted for presentation by mining magnate Sammy Marks to his friends and colleagues. Sammy Marks was also instrumental in the building of the Railway between Pretoria and Lourenco Marques, and having struck up a friendship with President Paul Kruger, he was allowed the use of the National Mint for one day. These coins were struck from gold from his own mines. Krause states 215 pieces minted, with just 39 coins having been graded by NGC, it is believed many fewer than the original 215 examples survive today. Seldom offered for sale, a rare opportunity for the advanced South Africa Collector.
