ISLAMIC, Umayyad Caliphate. temp. 'Abd al-Malik ibn Marwan. AH 65-86 / AD 685-705. AR Drachm (33mm, 2.90 g, 3h). Arab-Sasanian type. Issue of Salm ibn Ziyad, governor of Khorasan. MRW (Merv) mint. Dated AH 63 in Pahlavi (AD 682/3). Crowned Sasanian-style bust right; in outer margin, bismillah with triple pellets flanking lowest star-in-crescent; c/m: p'lhan in Pahlavi in incuse twice / Fire altar with ribbons and attendants; star and crescent flanking flames. For coin: SICA I 333 (example without c/m); Walker, Arab-Sasanian 126; Album 18; ICV –; for c/m: Walker, Arab-Sasanian, p. cxliv and c/m 46. Lightly toned, wavy flan. VF. Very rare countermark.
