In 79 BC Metellus was sent to Spain as Proconsul. After repeated failures he defeated Sertorius and was hailed 'Imperator' by the army. He celebrated his victory with magnificent entertainments and it is probably on this occasion that this denarius was struck. The type of the head of Pietas was selected in recognition of his title of Pius that he received when he besought the people of Rome to recall his father from banishment.
