The 1887 gold Two Pounds was only the second currency piece ever produced, with the previous being that dated 1823 in the reign of George IV; and was minted to commemorate the Golden Jubilee of Victoria's reign. There was a detailed article "Two-Pound Pieces of 1887" by Dyer and Lubbock in "Numismatics: Witness to History - Essays to Commemorate the 35th Anniversary of the I.A.P.N." published 1986.
