Parthian Kingdom. Parthamaspates. Ca. A.D. 116. AR drachm (20 mm, 3.68 g, 12 h). Ekbatana. Bust of Parthamaspates left, wearing diademed tiara ornamented with star and crescents / Archer seated right, holding bow; below bow, monogram. Sellwood 81.1; Shore 423. Toned. Good metal. Good very fine.

Parthamaspates was the great-nephew of Osroes I. He was set on the Parthian throne by Trajan who had deposed Osroes in A.D. 116, but as soon as Hadrian abandoned Trajan's Parthian conquests he himself was deposed by the Parthian nobility and fled back to the Romans who had him installed as the client king of neighboring Osroene. He is depicted on the reverse of a sestertius of Trajan commemorating the event, where it shows him standing with his back to a platform upon which the emperor sits, placing a diadem upon his head. Before him is the kneeling figure of Parthia with her arms outstretched towards both him and the Roman emperor (cf. RIC 667).
