England. William I. 1066-1087. AR penny (19 mm, 1.23 g, 8 h). Bonnet type (BMC ii). York. Roscetel (Hrossketill), moneyer. + PILLEM II REX, crowned draped bust of William I facing, with pendilia / + ROSCETELONEOFI (S retrograde), short voided cross, annulet at center. North 842; BMC 175, pl. VI, 14; SCBC 1251. Rare - 8 listed in EMC/SCBI, 2 listed (probable but not legible) in a single lot in Coin Archives (Morton & Eden 91, 62); all of the existing specimens are apparently from the same dies. Possibly heat damaged; broken in half and repaired. Good fine.

Purchased by the consignor from Stoneridge Rarities, 2018.
