Ancient Rome, 1st-3rd century AD. Small Roman bronze gladius / sword amulet. One of the most attractive and desirable ancient amulets. Issued to a soldier wounded in combat, much like a modern-day "purple heart" medal. The hole in the blade is representitive of a hole in the body. "I may have a hole in my body but I shall fight on."
