Anonymous. 211-208 BC. AR Denarius (19.5mm, 4.04 g, 8h). Rome mint. Helmeted head of Roma right, with a curved two line visor; X (mark of value) behind / The Dioscuri, each holding spear, on horseback right; ROMA, in raised letters within linear frame, below. Crawford 44/5; Sydenham 140; RSC 2; Type as RBW 169; Brinkman-Debernardi Group 6. Toned, some minor pitting. Good VF.

From the Andrew McCabe Collection. Ex Ars Time Company eAuction 4 (4 November 2014), lot 74.

This coin, cf. RRC pl. IX, 24, is likely later than other RRC 44/5 varieties, because there are no known quinarii or sestertii – all other RRC 44/5 types have one or both smaller denominations. This is also the only RRC 44/5 with the ROMA legend always in relief. There are two sub-varieties: with or without tufts on the back of the helmet. This coin has no tufts and is identical in style to the very rare early rostrum tridens denarius RRC 62/1 [cf. Steve Brinkman and Pierluigi Debernardi, Anonymous Roman Republican Denarii on http://stevebrinkman.ancients.info/anonymous/]. [Andrew McCabe]
