Government of India, proof/specimen 10 rupees, CALCUTTA, 26 March 1858, serial number F/F 30416, black text with value in guilloche at lower-left, printed signature of Gattie low right (Gattie signed Bank of England notes under the tenure of the Chief Cashier, Matthew Marshall from 1860-1864),, (Pick A1pp, Jhunjhunwalla-Razack 2.1 for type), on Government of India 'Portals' watermarked paper, in PMG holder 55 about uncirculated, printer's annotations at lower margin 'the printing a little too low' and a hand written date '29 Feb 1860' and much of the features on the issued note missing. An important note as it is one of the first prototypes for the Government of India issues after the passing of The Government of India Act on 2nd August 1858. An interesting point to note is that the date printed was before the printing of the note in 1860, it is unclear to why this date was chosen.A magnificent rarity. The London issue of the same note sold at Spink April 2019. Exceptional.

Estimate: £30,000 - £40,000
