Seleukos Nikator ('Seleucus victor') had received the satrapy of Babylon by the new regent, Antipater, for thanking him for having betrayed Perdikkas, acting regent for the late Alexander the Great's brother Philip III Arrhidaeus, during the First War of the Diadochi (321-320 BC). Seleukos had to flee Babylon in 315 BC, when Antigonus I Monophthalmus ('one-eyed') and his son Demetrius went to war against the other generals, and joined Ptolemy I Soter ('the saviour') in Egypt, but a victory in 312 BC at the Battle of Gaza allowed him to return to Babylon – and he chose this date as the starting point of the Seleucid Era. He continued fighting, and he conquered most of Alexander's empire, with the exception of Egypt (ruled by Ptolemy), Thrace (ruled by Lysimakos) and Macedon (ruled by Cassander), and the four of them declared themselves king. His dynasty lasted two more centuries, but he himself was killed in 281 BC by Ptolemy's son, a reaction to Seleukos' desire to continue conquering other territories.
