Exemplaire de la vente Giessener Münzhandlung 58 du 9 avril 1992, N°982 et de la vente 51 Gallery du 19 octobre 2017, N°110.
4.55g - Depeyrot 21/1 - RIC VIII 95.

The military iconography of this coin is significant, as Julian was not just the well-known pagan philosopher who criticized Christianity, but also a successful general, who did not mind joining his troops on the battle field or sleeping among his solders. It was struck in Sirmium (now Sremska Mitrovica in northern Serbia), which was not just the capital of Illyricum and Pannonia Secunda but also one of the Empire's four capital cities since AD 294, close to where Julian won most of his victories against Germanic tribes, to which the depicted captive certainly belonged.

Estimate: 20000 CHF
