Freemasonry: Martin Folkes (1690-1754), Archaeologist, Numismatist and Freemason, copper medal, 1742, struck in Rome, bare head r., rev. Sphinx before the pyramid of Caius Sestius in Rome, SVA SIDERA NORVNT, 38mm. (MI.571/206; Eimer 572), extremely fine
Folkes was Deputy Grand Master (1724-1725) of the Freemasons in England. The medal is dated on the reverse to a masonic calendar, ROMÆ. A.L. S742 (perhaps for 5742).
