Richard Hornsby (1790-1864) developed mechanical devices, most notably steam engines, for use in agricultural science. The business was further developed by his sons and the firm of R Hornsby & Sons built the first experimental diesel engine in 1892. Amongst their other important innovations was the caterpillar track in 1905, which led to the development of the tank and revolutionised land warfare.See also 1761
