BRITISH COMMEMORATIVE MEDALS. Royal Agricultural Society of England, Silver Prize Medal, 1843, by William Wyon, diademed bust of Queen Victoria left, rev inscriptions around wreath of corn, edge engraved RICHARD HORNSBY FOR HIS MANURE CART WITH DRILLS ATTACHED, BOTH FOR RIDGE & FLAT CULTURE: HIS OWN INVENTION 1843, 55mm (BHM 1985; Eimer 1340). Almost extremely fine, minor spotting in fields.
Richard Hornsby (1790-1864) developed mechanical devices, most notably steam engines, for use in agricultural science. The business was further developed by his sons and the firm of R Hornsby & Sons built the first experimental diesel engine in 1892. Amongst their other important innovations was the caterpillar track in 1905, which led to the development of the tank and revolutionised land warfare.See also 1761
