Great Britain - AV Thrymsa or Shilling Circa 600-645 AD, Gold, Anglo-saxon period c. 600 – c. 775 Unknown mint. Head right with two-banded collar with pellets. Rev. cross within circular border of pellets.Seaby 761 var; North 26var; Grierson & Blackburn 666 var.At first glance, the shilling appears to be a clipped flan, however it is struck on the relatively correct weight of Gold Thrysma, respectively 1.21-1.29 g. The coin is of unusually fine gold. Reference is made to this in Grierson & Blackburn - #666. This is in contrast with other Gold Thrymsa made predominantly with pale gold. The style of the bust is similar to those found in the Crondall Hoard, which is located in the Ashmolean Museum. Further comparison finds this to be a 'Wuneetton' type. This type was not represented in the Crondall hoard, unlike the Witmen type from which it probably derived. With the legend on the reverse not fully legible this cannot be fully confirmed. Thickness 2 mm; 10.5 mm; 1.23 g. Extremely rare Virtually as struck deep yellow gold Extremely fine
