SNG ANS 182.The accession of Philip II to the Macedonian throne in 359 BC marked the beginning of a new chapter in the history of the Classical Greek World. Although less known than his famous son Alexander III the Great, Philip II arguable laid the foundation for conquering the Persian Empire. Philip proved to be both a great political and military mind. During his reign much was achieved in part by his reformation of the Ancient Macedonian army, establishing the Macedonian phalanx that proved critical in securing victories on the battlefield. Furthermore, he would unify the Kingdom through his many marriages. Philip certainly bested Henry VIII with his number of wives, he had seven wives in total. Olympias of Epirus, his fourth wife, was the mother of Alexander the Great, a devout member of the snake-worshipping cult of Dionysus. The introduction of the Gold Stater was struck at two principle mints Pella and Amphipolis and would continue to be struck in his name almost 40 years after his assassination in 336 BC.8.58 g.
