AR Dekadrachm Circulated in Babylon circa 323 BC, ALEXANDER III the Great 336–323 BC, Macedonian Kingdom Head of young Herakles right, wearing lion's skin. Rev. Zeus enthroned left, feet on stool, holding eagle and sceptre; (ΑΛΕΞΑΝΔΡΟΥ) right; beneath throne monogram and M.Sear 6712; Muller 669; Price 3660From a Dutch private collection. Alexander the Great came to power after his father's assassination in 336 BC. Building on the foundation his father had laid, at only thirty-three years old he had conquered most of the known world. From the deserts of Arabia to the mountains of Afghanistan and the jungles of India. His army, however greatly outnumbered, crushed the Persian Empire in less than 4 years. He unlocked the vast treasures of the Persian Empire and started to remint the Persian coinage to pay his Army and followers. Despite the large-scale minting of coins over several mints, the Dekadrachm was struck in limited quantities. With a relatively large value of 10 Attic Drachms and 2.5 Tetradrachms the coin was most likely a presentation piece only given to his bravest and most loyal followers. This Dekadrachm of Alexander is missing from most of the world's major institutional collections and is one of the greatest rarities of the Ancient Greek coinage.34.72 g. RR. Very rare NGC F. Strike 5 of 5, Surface 1 of 5. Smoothing
