South Africa - Sammy Marks tickey or Threepence struck in gold 1898, Gold, PAUL KRUGER 1883–1902 Bust of Paul Kruger to left. Rev. value divides date within wreath.Hern ZP5; KM. Pn. A23.Samuel Marks was a Lithuanian-born South African industrialist and financier. He had stakes in the Sheba gold mine near Barberton and was the founder of Union Steel Corporation. Article 9 of the ZAR Mint Act permitted the coining of gold for private persons. In 1898 Marks struck 215 gold tickeys as mementos for his relatives and friends, including President Kruger. The dies were official Mint dies meant for the production of silver 1898 Threepences, however no pieces in silver were struck. Although no one knows the source of the gold or how the gold blanks were made or by whom, it is highly likely the gold originated from the Sheba gold mine near Barberton as this was the only gold mine in which Marks had a substantial stake.RRR.
