Tokens from the Late David Griffiths Collection (Part VIII)

Numismatists Tokens and Ephemera, YORKSHIRE, Halifax, Samuel Hamer, [1901], copper mule of two obvs., sun in splendour on a shield, small human eye as a crest, examine with care, rev. similar but large human eye as crest, edge plain, 35mm, 23.72g/12h (W 3039 rev., obv. not listed; Bell, 1966, A6a rev., obv. not listed). Virtually as struck with full original colour, extremely rare and interesting £120-£150

---

Provenance: Bt S.E. Schwer December 1980.

The obverse die used on this piece, with the small human eye and exhibiting small positional changes of the legend and punctuation, exhibits the beginnings of a flaw by the left-side rosette and was presumably discarded on the instructions of the fastidious Hamer, although not before this interesting mule, utilising the regular obverse die for the first of Hamer's 1901 tokens, was produced. Whether it pre-dates the first of Hamer's 1901 tokens is not known
