Barzillai Lowsley (1840-1905), served in the Royal Engineers in Barbados, 1862-72, and then in Ceylon, 1872-82, ending his career with the rank of Lt-Col. The family seat was at Hampstead Norreys, near Newbury; Lowsley was a noted coin and token collector, student of Berkshire dialect and folklore and the game of whist
