BRITISH COINS. AN OLD COLLECTION OF GOLD ANGELS, HALF-ANGELS AND QUARTER-ANGELS. Henry VIII, Gold Angel, third coinage, St Michael slaying dragon, both feet on dragon, tail terminates in field below left wing tip, right wing tip crosses linear circle, annulet over halo, initial mark large lis (1538-1541) both sides, hENRIC8D'G' AGL' FRA'ZHIB'REX O, rev ship sailing right, with short bowsprit terminates in field, h touches rope, PERCRVCE' TVA' SALVA nOS XPE' REDE', 4.96g (cf Schneider 624; N 1830; S 2300). Flan split to dragon's head, two digs, once cleaned, very fine.
With an intriguing old ticket that appears to be in the hand of R C Lockett but does not match any of the coins in his sales, this "Lockett" ticket states that the coin was ex Carlyon Britton collection and bought from Spink.
