BRITISH COINS. Other Properties. Charles II (1660-1685), Gold Two-Guineas, 1679, second laureate head right, rounded truncation, CAROLVS.II. DEI.GRATIA, toothed outer border both sides, rev inverted die axis, crowned cruciform shields, inner bands of crowns frosted, five strings to Irish harp, sceptres in angles, four interlinked C's in centre, date at top either side of English crowned arms, .MAG. BR.FRA. ET.HIB REX, edge obliquely grained, 16.78g (Schneider -; MCE 43; S 3335). Some very light hairlines, very attractively toned with plenty of copper red colour, superb as struck and very rare this nice, highly desirable.

This cataloguer knows of no other Two-Guineas as deeply toned as this piece. The only comparable coin is the 1676 proof-like piece sold in the Millennia collection by Goldbergs of California on 26 May 2008 for $65,000 hammer.
