George III (1760-1820), Gold Proof Two-Pounds, 1820, engraved by Benedetto Pistrucci, laureate head right, date below, GEORGIUS III D: G: BRITANNIARUM REX F: D:, linear circle and toothed border with raised rim both sides, rev inverted die axis, St George slaying dragon with sword, broken lance on left of ground line, tiny raised B.P. in upper right of exergue, edge inscribed in raised letters, DECVS ET TVTAMEN. ANNO REGNI LX., stops are cinquefoils, 15.93g (WR 179 R3; KM Pn82; Fr 370; S 3784). Light rim nicks and hairline scratches both sides, nick under eye and some on the neck, otherwise retaining brilliance with a red hue, good extremely fine and one of only sixty specimens struck, extremely rare.
Had George III lived longer no doubt more of these beautiful coins would have been struck, the work and striking of them coinciding with the date of the King's death, 29 January 1820.
