CIMMERIAN BOSPOROS. Pantikapaion. Circa 370-355 BC. Hemidrachm (Silver, 15 mm, 2.62 g, 8 h). Head of Pan with a pointed beard, goat's ears and a pug nose facing slightly to right. Rev. ΠANTI Lion walking right. HGC 7, 64. MacDonald 41. Very rare and in exceptional condition for the issue. Beautifully toned and with a wonderful facing head of Pan. Slightly rough and with a few minor marks, otherwise, about extremely fine.
From a European collection, formed before 2005.
The facing head of Pan on this coin is a real masterpiece, showing a wildness and ferocity that mirrors the proximity of its polis to the savage Skythian tribes, at the edge of the known world.
