IONIA. Uncertain. Circa 600-550 BC. Hemihekte – 1/12 Stater (Electrum, 8 mm, 1.38 g), Phokaic standard. Head of a griffin or a dragon to right; behind, seal (?) upward. Rev. Quadripartite incuse square. BMFA -. Bodenstedt -. Hurter & Liewald -. Rosen -. SNG Kayhan -. SNG von Aulock -. Von Fritze -. Apparently unpublished. A few minor edge cracks, otherwise, good very fine.
Exactly where this enigmatic tiny coin was struck is unclear: the small animal behind the griffin's (or dragon's?) head could be a seal, in which case it would be Phokaian, but the details are too soft to be sure. It certainly does not look like a Kyzikene tunny.
