ASIA MINOR. Uncertain. Medallion (Bronze, 68 mm, 229.21 g), Asia Minor, circa 1st-3rd centuries. Hero, with bipennis behind, seated three-quarter facing to right on horse prancing right. Rev. Blank. A large and impressive piece struck in high relief. A few tiny casting holes on the edge, otherwise, nearly extremely fine.

The iconography of a male figure carrying a bipennis on a prancing horse is familiar from many Roman Provincial coins from western Asia Minor, in particular from Lydia and Phrygia, where the rider is often identified as Mên or Apollo in numismatic literature. However, in the absence of distinctive attributes and legends other than the bipennis, it is perhaps best to see him as a more abstract hero or god.
