MACEDON. Akanthos. Circa 470-430 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 28 mm, 17.30 g, 6 h). Lion right, attacking a bull collapsing to left; in exergue, tunny swimming to left. Rev. AKA-N-ΘIO-N Raised quadripartite square surrounded by inscription; all within shallow incuse square. AMNG III, 2, 21. Desneux 97 (D95/R88). SNG ANS -. A beautiful piece of fine style. Some die corrosion on the obverse, but in an early state, otherwise, extremely fine.


From a European collection, formed before 2005.

Almost all the surviving examples of this particular, beautiful obverse die show heavy die corrosion, with this coin actually being one of the earliest and finest known examples.
