Maximianus, first reign, 286-305. Sestertius (Bronze, 24 mm, 5.74 g, 7 h), Rome, 285. IMP MAXIMIANVS P F AVG Laureate, draped and cuirassed bust of Maximian to right. Rev. HERCVLI PACIFERO Hercules standing front, head to left, holding olive branch in his right hand and club and lion's skin in his left. Gnecchi III, p. 80, 26. RIC -, cf. 532 and pl. X, 7 (differing obverse legend, but struck from the same reverse die). Extremely rare. An exceptional coin with an illustrious pedigree. Beautifully struck, with a fine green patina and undoubtedly among the finest known examples from this final series of Roman sestertii. Extremely fine.
