Maximianus, first reign, 286-305. Aureus (Gold, 20 mm, 5.52 g, 1 h), Cyzicus, 288-289. MAXIMIANVS AVGVSTVS Laureate head of Maximianus to right. Rev. COS II Maximianus on horseback to right, raising his right hand in salute. Calicó 4633. Cohen 86. RIC 598. Rare. A superb example, perfectly centered and lustrous. Virtually as struck.

Rooted in Republican triumphal processions, adventus were much more than simple arrivals: they were impressive displays of imperial might and often commemorated with the emission of coins showing the emperor on horseback and greeting his subjects. It is unclear exactly which arrival in a city this wonderful aureus refers to, as Maximian campaigned extensively in Germania in 287-289, but the type was struck over a longer period of time for both Diocletian and Maximianus and is thus likely to be understood as a general display of imperial presence and victoriousness.
