Commodus (177-192). AE Medallion, Rome mint, 186-187 AD. D/ M COMMODVS ANTONINVS PIVS FELIX AVG BRIT. Laureate bust right, wearing slight drapery on far shoulder and aegis. R/ PM TR P XII IMP VIII/ COS V PP. Tellus reclining left, left arm resting on basket of fruit (?), holding grain ears (?) and cradling long vine branch. To left, male figure naked but for chlamys over left shoulder, standing right, holding rod and guiding a pair of oxen. Cf. Gnecchi pl. 84, 8 var; Cf. C. 526 (Fr. 400) var. (bust draped and cuirassed). AE. g. 63.00 mm. 39.00 RR. Extremely rare and apparently never offered for sale. A spectacular and impressive example. Dark green-brown patina. Good VF.
